Have you ever wondered why you feel invigorated or energized when walking through a garden or even bushwalking? This sense of renewal can be explained by the concept of grounding, particularly in the context of gardening.

In a conversation with a friend, she explained the meaning of grounding in terms of gardening which involves connecting with the earth and ground underfoot. According to Swansons Nursery in Seattle, grounding in the garden starts with understanding “ungrounding,” a state where a person becomes unwell, angry, anxious, depressed, or suffers from illnesses such as cancer. Grounding in the garden involves taking off your shoes, connecting with the grass, and walking through your garden. This practice is not just about physical contact with the earth but also about engaging all your senses.

As you walk, take deep breaths to inhale the freshness of your flowers, the air, and the myriad scents emanating from your garden. This mindful walk encourages you to be aware of each step, to observe the growth of your flowers or vegetables, and to focus on your breathing—long and strong. For some gardeners, this may become a morning ritual, spending 10-15 minutes walking barefoot through their garden. You might even pick some fresh flowers for indoors; however, this is not a time to work on your garden. Instead, it is a form of routine exercise and meditation that can assist the avid gardener.

Grounding in the garden is a time to reconnect and ground oneself to the energy given from the earth within your garden. This simple yet profound practice can transform your garden into a sanctuary of healing and well-being.
