Last week, I watched a movie called ‘Cabrini,’ which explores a profound faith journey. It tells the true story of Frances Xavier Cabrini, an Italian nun from Sicily. Cabrini and her colleagues travelled from Italy to America. They were sent to New York to start an orphanage for Italian immigrant children. These children were often orphaned, abandoned, homeless, or poor. The story is set in 1889, a time when women and Italians faced severe discrimination in America.

In the movie, Italians were derogatorily referred to as rats, living in shanty towns, mud and among actual rats. The narrative showcases one nun’s remarkable courage, determination, stubbornness, and fortitude against power, racism, discrimination, and illness. Cabrini went on to become an entrepreneur, all under the ‘grace and service of God.’

In one poignant scene, Cabrini asserts, “We can do all things through Christ who strengthens us,” (Phillipians 4 v 13)  regardless of one’s status, cultural background, academic achievement, or health conditions. This statement underscores the film’s central theme of faith and resilience.

The actress portraying Cabrini, Dell Anna, told USA Today that the movie is an inspiring story for women. She emphasized the importance of trusting one’s instincts and never giving up on dreams. This message resonates deeply, especially given the historical context where women often faced significant opposition, usually from men.

‘Cabrini’ is a powerful film that highlights the strength of faith and the impact of unwavering determination. It serves as a reminder that with faith, one can overcome immense obstacles and achieve great things.
